1.1Discussion.Respones.WhatWouldYouDowith12MonthstoLive.docx 1.1 What Would You Do with 12 Months to Live? INSTRUCTIONS: Read and respond to the following two discussion posts.   Diamond Watching the documentary made me think about how easily life can slip away while we’re caught up in routines, responsibilities, and the pursuit of stability. The documentary followed Dr. Dave on a 12-month journey to rediscover joy and purpose showing that sometimes we need to take a step back and ask ourselves what truly matters. One of the biggest takeaways was the idea of intentional living is being present, embracing change, and pursuing what brings fulfillment. It reminded me that even through challenges we still have the power to shape our experiences and find joy. Psalm 90:12 says, “Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.” This verse reminds me that life isn’t endless and I don’t want to look back and feel like I should have put my time and efforts into things that were more meaningful. I’ve spent a lot of time focused on responsibilities, ambitions, and even stress, but if I knew I only had 12 months left I’d want to shift my focus. I’d want to be more intentional in how I treat people, making sure my words and actions align with my values. I’d want to extend more grace and patience, not letting small frustrations get in the way of meaningful relationships. At the same time, I wouldn’t want to abandon my drive. I’d just want to make sure I’m using it to create something that lasts beyond me. If I had 12 months left, I’d focus on three main things. First, I’d prioritize relationships, making sure my loved ones know how much they mean to me. I wouldn’t let small disagreements or misunderstandings get in the way of spending as much time as possible with them. Second, I’d focus on personal growth through my career, my faith, and make attempts to become the best version of myself. I wouldn’t hold back on chasing dreams, because there would be no “later” to fall back on. Lastly, I’d find a way to give back, whether through mentorship, a nonprofit, or something that helps others long after I’m gone. This exercise really made me think why wait for an expiration date to live like this? Maybe the best takeaway is that I should start making these changes now, while I still have time. 1.1 Ashley Summary of your notes on key points from the documentary.   Following the death of his father and feeling vocationally stagnated, Dr. Dave began to ponder ways in which to regain his joy and laughter. He asked himself an important question, not what does the world need but, “What makes me come alive?” He identified three things he wanted to do in order to regain his laugh. 1) Wander and travel. 2) Write and record; possibly make a living doing that. 3) Live in awe and wonder. He was struggling with finding joy and meaning in his life and wanted to look for the clues (breadcrumbs) as to what would bring him happiness and make him come alive again, much like Hansel and Gretel finding their way back home by following the breadcrumbs they left behind. The breadcrumbs were little pieces of evidence he could use to put together the puzzle of what would bring him joy. He found these breadcrumbs in films, stories, quotes, pictures, and so forth that deeply resonated with him and gave him insight as to his next move in life. He moved into a mindset of gratitude for what he had and used what brought him joy in order to get himself unstuck and move in the right direction of his life. As you consider the brevity of life, looking back and into your future, how do you want your life, reactions to others, and service to be different or stay the same?           I want my life to count for something, and it does. I want people to have an encounter with me, either briefly or long-lasting, and come away feeling good and empowered. Maya Angelou once said, “People will forget what you say, but they will always remember how you made them feel.” I want those memories of me to bring happiness to others. I would like to increase my service as time passes, and I may be able to provide more. I have already started to change little things in my life and let certain things go. I try to change my tone and speak sweeter and with more compliments and praise to people. The spoken word is so powerful, so why not say things that uplift someone? I have much to offer the world, and being of service makes me feel good. List at least three items representing what you would do with 12 months to live. 1. See the world, travel. Experience different places, people, and cultures and experience what unites people. Hear different languages and eat different foods. Go to NYC, Paris, and Italy, among others. 2. Experience true beauty and be awestruck. This goes along with travel but travel specifically to be awed by the natural wonders of the world, like watching a pod of dolphins while sailing in a Catamaran, seeing the Northern Lights, or hiking in a place like Machchu Pichu or seeing the waterfalls of Yosemite. 3. I would write letters of appreciation to people I love and express to everyone who has meant something to me how I feel. Maybe have a big party and invite everyone I like. I would try to make books/photo albums/letters for each of my children. Perhaps I would even videotape myself reading the letters to each of them. 4. Experience true peace, serenity, and joy. 5. Do something crazy like skydiving, scuba diving, or singing karaoke, something I ordinarily would be too afraid to do. 1.2Discussion.Responses.CapstoneImplementationPlan.docx 1.2 Discussion: Capstone Implementation Plan INSTRUCTIONS: Read and respond to the two posts (Travis and Ashley) below. 1.2 Travis Detailed description of your Capstone Project.   My Capstone Project will consist of a gratitude project in which I will write letters of gratitude to 3 individuals who have had a major impact on my development as a person, along with a survey documenting the experiences of a few family members and friends about their experiences with gratitude. This way, we research gratitude on both a chronic and situational level and also on a contextual level of recent experiences. This gives us both on a reflective level and also on the collectivism of retrospective insights.     2. Who is/are the person(s) you are targeting for the Capstone Project?   The target audience for this project would be a few friends and family who take the survey. The next playing group is supporting continued dialogue about the role of gratitude in maintaining emotional health, resilience, and productive relationships with others, consistent with the tenets of life coaching and positive psychology (Seligman, 2011).     3. What is the main benefit you intend to provide to your target audience through your Capstone Project?   Through my Capstone Project, the core value I plan to communicate to my audience is a better understanding of the transformative power of gratitude.   My mission is to advocate for gratitude through:   - Writing personal letters to those who have made a major impact in my life. - Inspiring my friends and family onto a reflective journey through a survey. - Engaging in conversation about its significance in our lives.   The goal of this project is to:   - Improve not only our personal insights but also to form a united community that can exchange thoughts and personal experiences. - Help all of us who are connected realize just how powerful gratitude is in enhancing emotional health and resilience, building better relationships, and enriching our lives in concrete ways.   This process aims to lead my audience towards incorporating thankfulness more intentionally into their lives, so as to promote well-being.   4. How do you intend to deliver and ensure that your target audience derives this benefit? To ensure that my target audience derives the intended benefits from my Capstone Project, I plan to implement a thoughtful and structured approach. My focus will be on three main components: writing heartfelt letters of gratitude, conducting a survey, and facilitating a group discussion.   Once the survey responses are collected, I will organize a group discussion. This forum will provide a supportive environment for participants to share insights and stories, fostering open communication about gratitude’s significance in our lives. This collaborative dialogue will not only enhance individual reflections but also reinforce the social connections among participants, creating a community of shared growth.     5. What main principle or theory from positive psychology are you emphasizing in your Capstone Project?   In my Capstone Project, I am emphasizing Barbara Fredrickson's Broaden-and-Build Theory from positive psychology. This theory posits that positive emotions, such as gratitude, broaden our thought-action repertoire, enabling us to explore new ideas, forge social connections, and cultivate personal resources that enhance our overall well-being (Fredrickson, 2001). By writing letters of gratitude to individuals who have significantly impacted my life, I aim to not only reflect on the positive experiences I’ve had but also to inspire those around me to recognize and express their own gratitude.   6. How will this principle from positive psychology be explicitly demonstrated in your project?   The first step involves writing letters of gratitude to three people that have had a radical impact on who I have become throughout my life, allowing me to not only acknowledge their positive influence in my life but also to create an even stronger emotional bond with these individuals. And so, this simple act of gratitude helps expand my vision of the world while reminding me of the community that is holding me up.   I will also create and send out a survey to my friends and family documenting their experiences with gratitude and to prompt them to consider who they appreciate in their lives and why. Participants were invited to come up with three things they were grateful for, as a means of invoking positive emotions (related to the broaden-and-build model) both individually and collectively. And the survey responses will help determine how gratitude looks and behaves across contexts, and what impact that has on emotional health and resilience.   After administering the survey, I will hold a group discussion in which participants will be able to communicate any insights/life experiences that they have had surrounding this topic of gratitude. Sharing this sense of gratitude not only strengthens social ties, but it also adds to our combined wisdom about how gratitude contributes to well-being. I will embrace vulnerability and foster an open discussion so that I can inspire introspection and each of my peers to cultivate their emotional intelligence.   7. Explain the timeline that you will need in order to fully implement your project. In other words, how much time is needed from the start of the project to the finish? Detail the actual steps you will take to implement the entire project from start to finish.   To effectively implement my Capstone Project on gratitude, I will follow a structured timeline over the course of three weeks, breaking down each component of the project in detail. Here’s how I plan to execute it from start to finish:   Week 1: Writing the Gratitude Letters (Days 1 - 5)  - Day 1: Identify and reflect on the three individuals who have significantly impacted my life. I will spend the day contemplating their contributions and my feelings of gratitude towards them. - Day 2-4: Dedicate specific time each day to write a heartfelt letter to each of the three individuals. Each letter will aim to articulate my appreciation and the specific ways these individuals have influenced my development. - Day 5: Complete and edit all three letters. I will consider adding personal anecdotes or specific memories that highlight the impact these individuals had on my life.   Week 2: Designing and Distributing the Survey (Days 6 - 11)  - Day 6: Create a survey that explores the experiences and perspectives on gratitude among my family and friends. It will include questions about who they appreciate and why, as well as how they express gratitude in their lives. - Day 7: Review and refine the survey to ensure that it is clear, easy to understand, and effectively captures the desired information. - Day 8: Distribute the survey to my selected friends and family via email or social media, providing a brief introduction to the purpose of the project. - Days 9-11: Allow time for responses to roll in. I will monitor the survey to ensure a good participation rate and follow up with reminders if necessary.   Week 3: Analyzing Results and Hosting a Group Discussion (Days 12 - 21)  - Days 12-14: Once I have collected all survey responses, I will spend this time analyzing the data to identify common themes and insights. This will help me prepare for the group discussion. - Days 15-16: Organize and schedule a group discussion with the family and friends who participated in the survey. I will create an agenda that encourages sharing insights and fostering open dialogue. - Days 17-18: Host the group discussion, creating a safe and supportive environment for participants to share their reflections on gratitude and their personal experiences. I will actively facilitate the conversation to ensure everyone has a chance to contribute. - Days 19-21: Following the discussion, I will collate the key takeaways and personal anecdotes shared during the session. I plan to reflect on what I learned from both writing my letters and hearing the perspectives of others.   (End of Week 3):  At the end of the three-week implementation period, I will compile my reflections, insights from the survey, and the outcome of our group discussion. This comprehensive documentation will not only serve as a record of the project but also help inform future endeavors related to gratitude and emotional well-being.   By adhering to this timeline, I can ensure that each step of my gratitude project receives the attention it deserves, allowing for meaningful reflection and engagement that aligns with the principles of positive psychology and the Broaden-and-Build Theory.     8. What logistical items need to be attended to before you are able to begin implementing your intended Capstone Project? This would include: a) securing the individual(s) involved; b) securing a location for the project; c) any preparations that are needed prior to implementation (such as research, funding, permissions, acquiring video or audio tools, etc.); d) any other logical items or resources that need to be acquired or attended to. Be specific and provide approximate dates for when you intend to have these logical items in place.   Before I can begin implementing my Capstone Project focused on gratitude, I need to address several logistical items in a timely manner. Here's a breakdown of what needs to be accomplished and the approximate dates for each item:   a) Securing the Individual(s) Involved:  I will need to reach out to the three individuals I intend to write gratitude letters to. This includes checking in with them to ensure they are open to receiving these letters and potentially discussing the impact they’ve had on my life. I plan to do this by February 28, 2025. Alongside this, I will also confirm my family and friends who will participate in the survey, ensuring that they are willing and available to take part.    b) Securing a Location for the Project:  The project will primarily take place in my home where I can feel comfortable writing the letters and assembling the survey data. For the group discussion, I plan to host it at a local community center or a friend’s house, where we can have an open dialogue. I hope to secure that location by March 2, 2025.    c) Preparations Needed Prior to Implementation:  - Research: I will need to dive deeper into the existing literature on gratitude to inform my survey questions and discussion points. I plan to allocate time for this research from Feb 28th to March 3rd.    - Funding: As this project requires minimal funding (perhaps for materials like stationery for the letters or printing surveys), I’ll assess what I need by March 7, 2025, and will source any needed funds from myself. I don’t envision a huge investment for this at all. (completed, surveys are digital and printing of letters won’t cost me anything).   - Permissions: If my survey involves data collection beyond a few friends and family, I might need to explore whether I require formal permissions, especially if I plan to publish the findings. I will determine if this is necessary by March 7, 2025.    - Acquiring Tools: I will need to gather materials for writing letters (stationery, pens) and prepare a digital platform for the survey (Google Forms or another online tool). I aim to have all tools and materials ready by March 3, 2025.  (Behind schedule since getting sick etc., but will be finished this weekend of March 7th ).   d) Other Items or Resources:  I plan to create a brief outline for my letters so that I can make focused points while writing. Creating questions for the survey that provoke thoughtful responses is equally important; I intend to draft them between March 4 and March 10, 2025. Additionally, I will organize a pre-discussion with a small group to refine the questions and decide on a framework for the group dialogue to ensure that it is constructive. This will be completed by March 20th, 2025. (The outline is down, and I will complete the letters this weekend).   By ensuring that all of these logistical items are addressed and in place, I will be well-prepared to implement my Capstone Project effectively, enhancing both my own journey of gratitude and that of my participants.   Overall, I’m off to a good start considering my recent health issues. This weekend, I will I finish my letters and present them. 1.2 Ashley Capstone Implementation Plan-Increasing Emotional Intelligence  Questions: I feel like maybe my teaching lesson is covering too much material. There's a lot of content, and I haven't made my slides yet. I will work on the slides this weekend. I also had the idea of having the kids do a gratitude tree where they write down on paper shaped like leaves what they are grateful for, and I could hang those "leaves" onto a paper tree or an actual standing mini tree branch. I need to order all my supplies tomorrow and complete my PowerPoint this weekend. 1. Detailed description of your Capstone Project.   My Capstone Project will be a teaching lesson and presentation about Emotional Intelligence with the components of grit, growth mindset, developing resiliency, and coping strategies for stress reduction to a fifth-grade class where I work as a school nurse. I want to incorporate emotional regulating techniques like deep breathing and relaxation exercises. I want to teach about physiological reactions to stress and accompanying coping mechanisms. I will need to perform an assessment prior to the lesson and another assessment after the lesson to evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching.  2. Who is/are the person(s) you are targeting for the Capstone Project?  My Capstone Project will involve delivering a presentation and lesson to a fifth-grade class. There will be approximately 25-30 students. The project will be a presentation with PowerPoint slides and will require lots of time for discussion and demonstration. I will also be administering a pre and post-intervention assessment tool. My project centers on delivering a lesson on Emotional Intelligence incorporating the concepts of grit, growth mindset, resiliency, emotional regulation, and stress management. I would also like to empower the students with specific and concrete steps to take when they are feeling anxious, stressed, and have overwhelming emotions. The project may be completed in two sessions, as there is a lot of material to cover and I want to give them ample time for questions and reflection. 3. What is the main benefit you intend to provide to your target audience through your Capstone Project?   The Middle School years are a time of tremendous changes: physically, emotionally, socially, and interpersonally. The students learn about English, Math, Science, etc., but many are in need of Social-Emotional learning. I think it would benefit them in their lives at school, at home, and in relating to others. Learning about grit, a growth mindset, and developing resiliency will help them in their academics, with their emotions, and in their relationships. I believe it will empower them and plant seeds for the future. The group I’m interested in targeting for my project is a fifth-grade class at a school where I work as a school nurse. Some of these students come into the health office frequently as a way of escaping the classroom, either because of work avoidance or because they feel stressed. I believe that some are experiencing anxiety. I also believe this lesson and techniques would be helpful for them as they go into Middle School in 6th grade the following year. 4. How do you intend to deliver and ensure that your target audience derives this benefit? There will be a pre-and post-assessment so that information can be quantified. I will get feedback from the teacher if she thought it was helpful and what comments or reactions she notices in the students following the lessons.  5. What main principle or theory from positive psychology are you emphasizing in your Capstone Project? · Emotional intelligence- Emotional intelligence is concerned with effectively managing and regulating emotions, especially when the feelings are overwhelming or intense. It also involves communicating and working through those emotions, even if they are strong and overpowering. Emotional intelligence is associated with increased well-being. People with higher EI have better mental health, improved moods and self-esteem, and better relationships. They have an increased capacity to cope with distress and negative experiences and have greater resiliency. (Catella, 2024) · Growth Mindset-based in part on the work of Carol Dweck. · Grit-based in part on the work of Angela Duckworth. · Techniques for increasing happiness and decreasing stress such as the power of Gratitude and learned Optimism-based in part on the work of Martin Seligman. 6. How will this principle from positive psychology be explicitly demonstrated in your project?  I will make a PowerPoint and reference the author/source on my slides. I plan to make this a fun project and be positive in my delivery. I want to hear from the students and encourage deep reflection. For example, if I speak about gratitude, I can have the students write down what they are grateful for.  7. Explain the timeline that you will need in order to fully implement your project. In other words, how much time is needed from the start of the project to the finish? Detail the actual steps you will take to implement the entire project from start to finish.  The timeline to implement the teaching lesson/presentation would be in the spring of 2025. The students have Middle School teachers who visit the school, and the transition to Middle School is looming in the students’ minds. It can be a time filled with uncertainty and anxiety. I would deliver the lesson in the next course, PSY-590, in week 2 or 3 and then the second part the following week. I may do one teaching lesson as well, instead of two. 1. I will need to get permission and buy-in from the teacher and Principal. 2. I may need to get parental permission; I will have to check on that. 3. I will need to make a PowerPoint. 4. I will need to have the equipment for the PowerPoint in the classroom. 5. I will need to make work packets for the students. 6. I will need to make pre and post-assessment sheets for the students. 7. I will need to have a place and time for the presentation
